Charlotte, NC - Senior women's tennis players Ofra Friedman and Ashleigh Murray earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors after helping lead the 49ers to the A-10 tournament championship match. Junior Ali Piacente earned Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference honors.
For only the second time in school history, the 49ers had two players earn all-conference honors in the same season after Murray and Friedman were named All-Atlantic 10. In 1992, Farah Khursheed and Melissa Schladweiler earned All-Metro Conference honors. Friedman and Murray join Khursheed, Schladweiler and Laura Swain (2002- All-Conference USA selection) as the five 49ers women's tennis player to earn all-conference honors in the program's history.
Friedman, Murray and Piacente played integral roles in helping the 49ers enjoy one of the most successful seasons in the program's history. The 49ers posted a 16-5 record, which is the most wins by the 49ers since 1991, en route to the program's best-ever finish in conference tournament play with a runner-up finish in the recently completed A-10 championships. The 49ers finished the season with victories in 16 of their final 19 matches including a 4-1 win over Saint Louis and a 4-0 win over Xavier in the A-10 tournament.
Friedman enjoyed her best season at Charlotte with a career-high 14 singles wins. She won 11 dual matches all at number one singles. She also teamed with Murray to form the 49ers top doubles team. They posted 13 doubles wins including an 8-6 win over Xavier's Kristen Clary and Kara Courtney in the A-10 semifinal match. She also earned A-10 player of the week honors this past season after posting three wins in a week at both number one singles and doubles. She was named team MVP as well this season.
Murray, earned Atlantic 10 player of the week honors twice this past season, finished the season with a 22-6 record. The 22 singles wins is tied for the sixth most singles victories in a season in the school history. She went 17-3 in dual matches mostly at number four singles. She finished the season with victories in 17 of her final 18 singles matches including straight sets wins over Saint Louis' Tara Grant and Xavier's Alicia Papa in the A-10 tournament. She finished her stellar four-year career as the program's all-time winningest singles and doubles player with 74 singles wins and 84 doubles wins.
Piacente earned Atlantic 10 academic all-conference honors after posting a 3.7 GPA in Art. She has been a stalwart in the middle of the 49ers lineup from her first day on campus. This season, she moved up to the number three singles position and thrived with a career-high 19 victories. She recorded 13 singles wins in dual match competition. She finished the season with four straight wins including straight sets wins over Saint Louis' Ana Renda and Xavier's Jackie Vilines in the A-10 tournament.
