Monroeville, Pa. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team won the third match of weekend, 4-3 over Saint Louis, to capture fifth place at the Club 4 Life at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Charlotte has been shorthanded in singles play, starting down a point with five healthy singles players, but taking the doubles point in each victory. Charlotte finishes the season 7-13.
The Niners defeated George Washington Friday, Rhode Island Saturday and Saint Louis on Sunday. Charlotte's only loss came Friday afternoon to eventual champion Temple.
"This was a great way to end the season," said Niners head coach Michaela Quinn. "Everyone worked really hard all throughout the tournament and I appreciate all that these ladies did for us to win."
With an unfinished match against Temple, the top doubles pair of Ana Spivakovsky and Yudeshnee Pillay finished a perfect 3-0 for the weekend with an 8-1 win Sunday morning. They were 14-2 paired together this season.
At number-three, Gabi Vergara and Kimber Redfern finished off their Billikens counterparts with an 8-4 decision to win the doubles point.
That counteracted a singles point that Charlotte had to concede due to injury, meaning the Niners had to win three singles matches, which they were able to do.
Pillay won her number-one match in straight sets over Amanda Hellberg. Pillay finished 3-0 in singles for the weekend and was 3-1 at number-one this season. She topped the team with 18 singles victories, ending at 18-11.
Redfern and Candace Cunningham won the other singles points at four and three in straight sets to secure the team victory. Redfern got to 10 singles victories, while Cunningham finished with eight on the year.
