Monroeville, Pa. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team advanced in the back draw into the fifth-place game of the Atlantic 10 Championships with a 4-3 win over the sixth seed Rhode Island Rams Saturday morning at the Club 4 Life.
The Niners won the doubles point with wins at one and two as Ana Spivakovsky and Yudeshnee Pillay improved to 14-2 as a pair with an 8-2 win. At number-two, Candace Cunningham and Koren Fleming evened their record to 3-3 with an 8-4 win to capture the first point of the match.
Spivakovsky could not go at number-one singles, so Rhode Island grabbed a tying point before singles tennis was played. All five Charlotte players moved up a spot and got wins at the top three spots to secure the tight win. Pillay and Cunningham won in straight sets at one and three, while Fleming needed a tie-breaking third superset to win the match.
Pillay is 18-11 in singles play, including a 3-1 mark at the top spot. Fleming got to double-figure wins, while Cunningham notched her eighth win of the season.
Seventh-seeded Charlotte takes on eighth-seeded Saint Louis Sunday morning at 8 a.m. in the fifth-place game.
