Johnson City, Tenn. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis squad traveled to Bristol, Tennessee to take on East Tennessee State Friday morning. The Niners were battling illness and injury en route to a 6-1 loss to drop to 3-3 on the season. The Bucs improved to 2-4.
Charlotte lost the doubles point after two long doubles matches. The 49ers number-one team of Ana Spivakovsky and Koren Fleming lost in a tiebreaker to Elena Volobueva and Whitney Trotter 8-7 (7-5 tiebreak). The number-two doubles team of Candace Cunningham and Kimber Redfern fell 8-6 to Tara Byrne and Tara Sheets.
In singles play, Charlotte's lone point of the morning came at number-one when Spivakovsky defeated Olya Batsula 7-5, 6-2 for the win. The Niners fell in straight sets in the next four matches and had to default with not enough healthy players left in the match.
Charlotte takes on Michigan State Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in Bristol before returning home.
