Charlotte Rallies Past A-10 Foe Dayton 2-1 and 7-4 in Doubleheader Action

49ers Now Lead the Conference in Overall Winning Percentage

March 22, 2008

Final Stats

Charlotte, N.C. - Behind a two-out RBI double to left field from junior catcher Jaime West in the bottom of the eighth, the Charlotte 49ers (17-16; A-10: 2-0) rallied past Dayton (11-10; A-10: 0-2) 2-1 in the first game of Atlantic 10 conference-opening doubleheader action Saturday afternoon at D.L. Phillips Softball Complex. Charlotte returned in game two of the series, scoring at least one run in the last five innings, to take the win 7-4.

Freshman pitcher Katy Hackett, throwing eight complete innings, held the Flyers to just five hits in the first contest, striking out five and walking only one batter. On the offensive end, sophomore outfielder Serena Smith and junior third baseman Jenny Rumbles led the 49ers with two hits apiece.

After a scoreless game through four, Dayton got on the board in the top of the fifth with a single to right center, turning in an unearned run. The 49ers answered to even the slate in the bottom of the sixth when a ground out by junior shortstop Cee Brooks turned in an infield error, brining home Smith from second base. After both teams left two on base in the seventh, Dayton failed to capitalize in the top of the eighth, once again leaving two on base after a triple from lead-off Meyer. Charlotte would respond with a Smith single after a ground out from freshman outfielder Whitney Williams before a Brooks ground out and West's game-winning double brought Smith home.

In game two, Dayton poured on three runs in the top of the second before the 49ers returned to score seven unanswered runs through the top of the seventh. The Flyers attempted a late run in the last inning, scoring on a homer to center field, but Charlotte pulled out the win behind the pitching of sophomore Emily Jeffery, who struck out six in her seven innings on the mound.

An RBI single from junior first baseman Alyssa Kemmerer put the 49ers on the board in the bottom of the second, which combined with a an RBI single to center field from Malene on the next at bat to cut the Dayton lead to one. Charlotte had another two-run half-inning in the third, with an RBI single from sophomore utility Keri Palma and double to left center from senior outfielder Emily Forbes, followed by the game-winning run in the fourth off a Brooks double. The 49ers would rack up one more run in each of the fifth and sixth innings off a Kemmerer triple and West double, respectively.

Charlotte returns to action Friday and Saturday with a two-game series at A-10 foe Rhode Island.
