Four Charlotte 49ers women's soccer players and Coach Jon Lipsitz earned All-Atlantic 10 honors off the 49ers back-to-back A-10 championship team. Lipsitz was named A-10 Coach of the Year. Senior midfielder Lindsey Ozimek was named the A-10 Midfielder of the Year as well as Student-Athlete of the Year. Ozimek was also named first-team All-Atlantic 10. While, freshman defender Whitney Bryant and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Brown earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Freshman midfielder Sam Huecker earned honorable-mention All-Atlantic 10 honors. Huecker and Bryant were named the A-10 All-Rookie team as well.
"I am very proud of the players that have earned All-Atlantic 10 honors," Lipsitz said. "We are appreciative that those players were recognized for their outstanding play. However, individual honors goes against the culture of our program which is always team before self. These players earning these honors recognizes the achievements of our entire team this season."
Ozimek, who is a three-time first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection, became the first-ever recipient of the A-10 Midfielder of the Year. Ozimek leads the A-10 with 11 assists and her 19 points leads the 49ers. Ozimek also holds the program's record for career assists with 41 and counting.
Ozimek, who is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, earned the program's first-ever Student-Athlete of the Year award after maintaining a 4.0 GPA in Special Education throughout her career at Charlotte. Ozimek was also named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team for the third straight season.
Brown, who was a A-10 All-Rookie team selection last season, is in the midst of a career-year in goal for the 49ers. She has started all nineteen games in goal for Charlotte this season. She has already set the program's single-season shutout record with 9.5 shutouts. Currently, she also has a 0.59 goals against average which is easily the lowest total in the program's history. She also has helped the 49ers defense limit 17 foes to a goal or less this season.
Bryant and Huecker improved the 49ers streak to 13 straight years in which Charlotte has had at least one player earn league All-Freshman team honors. Bryant gives the 49ers an All-Atlantic 10 defender in each of the past three seasons. She played an integral role on a defense which recorded 10 shutouts and limited 17 foes to a goal or less. Bryant has also scored a goal this season.
Huecker, who earned A-10 Player and Rookie of the Week honors earlier this season, is tied for the team-lead with six goals, with all six of her goals coming in A-10 play. She is also second on the team in assists with six and points with 18. She scored the game-winning goal in the 49ers A-10 title clinching win at Saint Louis last Saturday.
Lipsitz earned A-10 Coach of the Year after guiding the 49ers to their second straight Atlantic 10 regular-season title. This season, the 49ers have won 14 games and a school-record nine Atlantic 10 games. Lipsitz is the third different coach in the 49ers history that has earned league coach of the year honors after Robbie Church in 1997 and Neil Roberts in 2002 were named Conference USA Coach of the Year. Lipsitz, who is in his third season at the helm of the 49ers program, has recorded a 38-18-3 record with two Atlantic 10 Championship during his time with the 49ers.
"I am very appreciative of being named A-10 Coach of the Year by my coaching colleagues in the A-10," Lipsitz said. "The Coach of the Year award should be called the Staff of the Year award because it is the assistant coaches that really keep our program moving forward. This award is in honor of all the hard work that my assistant coaches Sari Rose, Allison Graham and Lisa Grubb have done to help our program win back-to-back A-10 titles."
Brown, Bryant, Huecker and Ozimek and the rest of the 49ers women's soccer team are the top seed in this week's Atlantic 10 Tournament which begins at Transamerica Field, Thursday, November 8 at 5:30 pm. The 49ers, who have earned a first-round bye, begin their quest for the A-10 title in the first semifinal game against the lowest remaining seed, Friday, November 9 at 5:30 pm.
