Charlotte, N.C. - Senior midfielder Lindsey Ozimek of the Charlotte 49ers Women's Soccer team was named a 2007 candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Monday, adding to her long list of athletic and scholastic accolades. Just in the last year, Ozimek has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American first team, Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team, A-10 Academic All-Conference team, NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-South region team, NCCSIA All-State team, NSCAA All-Southeast Region second team and Soccer Buzz All-Southeast Region third team.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the CLASS award, created in 2001, was designed to honor the attributes of seniors who remain committed to their university and elect to pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring. Twenty male and 20 female players have been selected as candidates for the 2007 soccer awards, based on personal qualities that define a complete athlete, according to Lowe's. While the on-the-field performance during their collegiate soccer careers is a factor in determining candidates and the eventual winner, their personal character and off-the-field achievements in the classroom and community are major areas of focus.
From the list of 20 candidates in each sport, a national media committee will select 10 finalists in both divisions in October, with the overall winners being announced after another round of voting in early December.
Ozimek, who owns the program's assist record with 32 career assists and competed on the U.S. U-20 national team, is currently tied for second in points (3) for Charlotte off one goal and three assists.
She and the 49ers open conference play Friday at Duquesne, where they hope to defend their 2006 A-10 women's soccer regular season title.
