Three 49ers Earn All-Atlantic 10 Honors

Sabrina Gregory and Danielle Burgin were named third-team All-Atlantic 10, while Wendy Stywalt was named to the A-10 All-Rookie team

Feb. 27, 2007

Charlotte, NC - Three Charlotte 49ers women's basketball players earned All-Atlantic 10 honors. Junior guard Sabrina Gregory (Fayetteville, NC/E.E. Smith HS) and sophomore center Danielle Burgin (Asheville, NC/Asheville HS) were named third-team All-Atlantic 10. Gregory also was named to the A-10 All-Defensive team as well as the A-10 academic all-conference team. Freshman guard Wendy Stywalt (Charlotte, NC/Vance HS) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team.

With Gregory and Burgin earning All-Atlantic 10 honors, the 49ers have now had two players earn all-conference honors in a season three times in the last five years including last season when Sakellie Daniels and Pam Brown were named first-team All-Atlantic 10.

Gregory is having a career-year for the 49ers this season. After coming off the bench her first two seasons, she has stepped into the 49ers starting lineup this season. She ranks 12th in the league in scoring with a team-leading 14.2 points per game. She was named Atlantic 10 player of the week after scoring a career-high 26 points in Charlotte's win over Old Dominion. She is second in the A-10 with a team-leading 126 assists. Her career-high 126 assists this season is tied for the tenth highest single-season total in school history. Gregory, who ranks fifth in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.538), is the only perimeter player ranked in the top 13 players with the highest field goal percentage in the league. Gregory, who guards the opposition's top wing player majority of the time, earned the all-defensive team honors after ranking second in the league with a career-high 67 steals. The 49ers have now had a guard earn all-defensive team honors for the second straight season since Daniels was named to the all-defensive team last season.

Gregory, who was named to the first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III women's basketball team a couples of weeks ago, was named A-10 Academic All-Conference team. She has a 3.75 GPA in Math.

Burgin ranks sixth in the A-10 in blocked shots with a team-leading 42 blocks, which is the ninth highest single-season total in school history. She ranks eighth in the league with a team-leading 7.4 rebounds per game. After averaging only 4.0 points per game last season as a freshman, she is second on the team in scoring with at 10.8 points per game. She is also second on the team and 12th in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.484).

This season, Burgin has scored in double-figures 17 times. She recorded her first two career doubles-doubles this season with 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in the 49ers win at Clemson. She also scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Charlotte's win at Richmond.

Burgin earned A-10 player of the week honors after scoring a career-high 24 points on 10-for-12 shooting from the field in Charlotte's win at Saint Louis. She grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a career-high four shots in the game.

Stywalt is third on the team in scoring (9.6 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.0 rpg). Stywalt has made a major impact on the 49ers success this season with 12 double-figure scoring games. She has also recorded two doubles-doubles with a career-high 22 points and 10 boards in the 49ers victory over Dayton. She scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the 49ers win over Winthrop. She recorded her second career 20 points scoring game with a team-high 21 points in the win over St. Bonaventure.

Earlier this season, Stywalt earned Atlantic 10 co-rookie of the week honors after her performance against Dayton as well as scoring the game-winning basket in the final seconds of the 49ers 61-59 win over Xavier.

Burgin, Gregory, Stywalt and the rest of the 49ers women's basketball team earned a first-round bye in this week's Atlantic 10 Tournament after finishing the regular season in fourth place. The 49ers face the winner of the Saint Joseph's and Rhode Island game in the A-10 Tournament quarterfinals, Saturday, March 3 at 2 pm.
