Three Charlotte 49ers men's soccer players earned All-Atlantic 10 honors. Junior forward Chris Salvaggione (Monument, CO/Gardner-Webb University) earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Freshman midfielder Will Shull (Shelby, NC/Shelby) was named to the A-10 All-Rookie team. Then, the 49ers defensive stalwart sophomore goalkeeper David Martin (Timnath, CO/Fort Collins) was named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team.
Salvaggione's first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection makes it four straight seasons that the 49ers have had at least one player named first-team All-Conference. Salvaggione joins former 49ers men's soccer stalwarts Evan Harding, Floyd Franks and Adam Ruud as first-team All-Atlantic 10 selections. Salvaggioine leads the A-10 in assists with eight. He is tied for third in the A-10 with a team-leading eight goals while leading the league in game-winning goals with four. Salvaggione's team-leading 24 points is the most points by a 49er in a season since Ruud amassed 24 points (11 goals and two assists) in 2004. Salvaggione was named A-10 Player of the Week after scoring two goals and contributing an assist in Charlotte's 3-0 win at Central Florida, October 3.
"Chris has had a tremendous first year for us after transferring from Gardner-Webb," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "He has a caused a lot of problems for our opposition's defense this season. His goal scoring has helped propel our team to the fourth-seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament."
Shull, who has started all 18 games for the 49ers this season at wide midfield, is tied for second in the Atlantic 10 with seven assists. He has also contributed three goals to the 49ers attack this season as well. Shull earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors after playing an integral role in Charlotte's 3-0 win at George Washington and 2-0 win at Richmond a couple of weeks ago.
"Will has had a tremendous freshman season for us," Gunn said. "He is naturally a striker who has adapted to playing left wide midfield for us since that is the position that our team needed him to play this season. He has been a solid performer for us all season. He is a big reason why our team finished fourth in the A-10."
Martin, who has a 3.96 GPA with an undeclared major, has been a stalwart for the 49ers in goal this season. Martin has recorded seven shutouts this season and has helped the 49ers defense hold 12 foes to a goal or less this season. Martin earned A-10 Player of the Week honors after only allowing one goal in 200 minutes of action against Massachusetts and Rhode Island a couple of weeks ago. Martin has a 1.10 goals against average while recording 79 saves.
Salvaggione, Shull and Martin and the rest of the 49ers men's soccer team, who are seeded fourth in the A-10 Tournament, battle fifth-seed Fordham in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Tournament at the University of Dayton, Thursday, November 15 at 8 pm.
