2007 A-10 Tournament Finalists Conclude Their Spring Exhibition Season

The 49ers will return seven of their top goal scorers from this past season in 2008.

May 1, 2008

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team finished their spring exhibition season with a 3-1-2 record against collegiate competition. The 49ers entered the spring fresh off an Atlantic 10 Championship finals appearance and a 12-7-2 record this past season. Furthermore CollegeSoccerNews.com has tabbed the 49ers a "team to watch for the 2008 season".

"It was a very productive and positive spring for our young team," said Charlotte 49ers head coach Jeremy Gunn. "Players such as Andres Cuero and Aaron Kepler, who saw limited action in the fall, really matured as the spring went along. Meanwhile many of the 2007 starters continued to build on their successes from last fall. The players worked very hard and the team continued to develop during the spring. We are now set to add a tremendous recruiting class that will assure that the squad will be much deeper than last season. We are very optimistic going into the 2008 season."

The 49ers finished the spring season with victories over James Madison, Davidson, and Sports Ed of the United Kingdom and draws against Campbell and Appalachian State with their lone defeat coming against South Carolina.

The Niners also played and lost to the local professional team the Charlotte Eagles in a very hard fought exciting game.

"Overall we were pleased as a staff with the spring performances," Gunn said. "There were times when the ball flowed as well as in our best performances of the fall season. I felt we continued to learn valuable lessons and gained more experience as a program throughout the year. This fall we will be able to begin the season knowing so much more about our players, and the returning players will now be familiar with how we want to play. We should be able to start the campaign further ahead than in 2007, which should allow us to strive for even greater success."

The 49ers will return 15 letterwinners, led by All-Atlantic 10 selections Chris Salvaggione and Will Shull as well as two-year starting goalkeeper David Martin, in 2008 from this past season's team. Charlotte returns seven of the nine players who scored goals this past season led by Salvaggione, Shull, Cuero, Luke Exley, Kent Long, Adam Gross and Kevin Fox.
