CollegeSoccerNews.Com Touts 49ers As A Team To Watch In 2008

CollegeSoccerNews.Com says that the 49ers are a team on the rise after reaching the 2007 A-10 Tournament Championship game.

Feb. 1, 2008

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers were listed as a team to watch in 2008 by Collegesoccernews.com. The 49ers return the majority of players off a team that won 12 games and reached their first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship match this past season.

Here is the excerpt from CollegeSoccerNews.com about the Charlotte 49ers men's soccer program.

Charlotte - The 49ers are currently flying under the radar on the national scene. You have to go back to the 1997 season to find a Charlotte team that set foot on the pitch during NCAA Tourney play. That could change in 2008. A young Charlotte squad under the direction of first year head coach Jeremy Gunn was one win away from earning an invite to the big dance in 2007 when they lost to Massachusetts 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament final. Charlotte's starting lineup in that contest consisted of eight underclassmen including three freshmen. There are reasons to believe that good things are going to happen at Charlotte. For starters, Gunn's own track record of success includes taking Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado to three NCAA Division II Championship matches during his eight year tenure there. Then there is the fact that ten starters are back from the 2007 team that was 12-7-2 overall and steadily improved as the season progressed. With a year of Gunn's system of play under their belts the 49ers look well positioned to have a breakout season in 2008. Forward Chris Salvaggione (8g, 9a) who was a First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2007 returns to power the Charlotte attack. Will Shull (4g, 7a) who had a very solid freshman campaign is among others who should add an additional dimension to the 49er attack. A solid core of backs and midfielders return along with goalkeeper David Martin who gives the 49ers a solid presence between the pipes.
