Charlotte, N.C. - Rising seniors Matt Mincer (Lenoir City, Tenn.) and Ray Sheedy (Keymar, Md.) have been named Cleveland Golf all-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Mincer and Sheedy become the first 49ers to ever be named an all-America Scholar by the GCAA.
Only juniors and seniors are eligible for the award and they must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a stroke average of 76.0 or better.
"Our golf program has made unbelievable strides since the fall of 2003, both academically and athletically," said A-10 Coach of the Year Jamie Green. "And it is a direct correlation, not a mere coincidence, that Matt Mincer and Ray Sheedy began playing here at that time. Both have played in every event for the 49ers in their three-year careers and both have willingly carried the torch for this program, on and off the course. Being a great student and a great athlete combined is a choice not just a talent and Matt and Ray continue to be great leaders for every incoming student that we have."
The duo led Charlotte to the Atlantic 10 Championship title, its second straight NCAA Regional appearance and its first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships.
Sheedy, the 2006 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, posted a school-record 71.77 stroke average and finished 27th, individually, at the NCAA Championships. A Finance major with a 3.87 GPA, Sheedy was a first team all-Atlantic 10 choice after placing third at the league championships. He became the first player in school history to register an under-par scoring average over the course of an entire season. Sheedy was also named to the Atlantic 10's all-Academic Team in men's golf.
Mincer, likewise, earned first team all-Atlantic 10 honors, placing fourth at the A-10 Championships. He posted a 73.1 stroke average and has a 3.20 GPA as a Geography major. Mincer owns the 49ers school record for career stroke average (73.0) and is a three-time all-conference choice.
Both have served as team representative for the 49ers Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
In addition to the A-10 title, Charlotte placed 22nd at the NCAA National Championships and concluded the season ranked in the nation's Top 25. During this past season, Charlotte placed in the top five of all 12 events leading up to the NCAA Championships. Their fifth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional was the best in school history and sent the 49ers on to the NCAA Championships for the first time.
