Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's golf team, which won the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship by three strokes on Sunday, was seeded ninth in the 27-team NCAA East Regional field. Charlotte, which is ranked in the top 25 by both Golfstat and Golfweek, earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of its A-10 Championship. It is the 49ers second straight NCAA bid, following last year's appearance in which the 49ers were seeded 19th in the East as an at-large participant.
Charlotte, which has been named Golfweek's National Team of the Week, following the A-10 title run, had all five of its players named all-Atlantic 10 Conference, illustrating a depth that A-10 Coach of the Year Jamie Green deems essential.
"What it comes down to is depth," said Green, during the A-10 Championships. "When you have depth you can play well any day."
Junior Ray Sheedy placed third overall (-7, 209) at the A-10 Championships. He owns a 71.2 stroke average that stands as the school's single-season record -- and marks the only time that a 49er golfer has posted a single-season stroke average of under par golf.
Junior Matt Mincer, who set the existing single-season record of 72.5 two years ago, placed fourth (-6, 210) at the A-10 Championships and owns a 72.7 stroke average that is tied for fifth all-time for the 49ers.
Sophomore Andrew DiBitetto, who matched the 49ers single round record with a 65 in his freshman season, finished tied for fifth (-5, 211) at the A-10 Championships. He owns a 72.6 stroke average that is tied for third all-time for the 49ers.
Sophomore Trevor Murphy, who placed ninth at the A-10, owns a 72.7 stroke average, which is tied for fifth all-time. Sophomore Jonas Enander Hedin matched DiBitetto with a -5, 211 to finish fifth at the A-10. He owns a 73.3 stroke average that ranks 11th all-time.
What it comes down to is a team that has posted top 5 finishes in all 10 events this year, including four tourney titles and three runner-up finishes. They won a league title in their first year in the A-10 after back-to-back runner-up finishes in Conference USA. And they picked up their second straight NCAA bid.
And the five regulars in the lineup all earned all-Atlantic 10 honors and all have season averages that rank in the school's all-time top 11. All five have carded multiple rounds in the 60's and all five have posted tournament scores under -6, 210.
Charlotte owns a single-season record team scoring average of 286.6 -- a record that is totally dependent on depth.
