Murphy Finishes at +3 at Wachovia Championship

49ers Senior Misses Cut By Two Strokes

May 2, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers senior Trevor Murphy shot a +4, 76 in the second round of the PGA Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club to finish the opening two rounds at +3, 147, two shots off the cut line of one-over par.

Murphy, who shot an opening round of one-under par 71, was the lone amateur in the field and was competing in his first PGA Tour event. Murphy qualified for the event on Tuesday. He was among 85 players who competed in Monday's qualifier for four open spots. He and Paul Claxton tied for fourth, forcing a playoff on Tuesday, which Murphy won on the second hole.

Murphy's three-over par total tied for the 93rd in the field. Among the other participants who did not make the cut: Luke Donald (+3), Stuart Appleby (+3), Chris DiMarco (+3), Master's Champ Trevor Immelman (+5), Justin Rose (+5), Paul Casey (+5), Jose Maria Olazabal (+5), Davis Love III (+5), Shigeki Maruyama (+6) and Mike Weir (+6).

Murphy did post the lowest score among his playing partners, besting Dustin Johnson (+5) and Chez Reavie (+6).

Murphy is a senior on the 49ers fifth-ranked golf team. He was competing in his first PGA event. Teammate Jonas Enander Hedin participated in the PGA European Tour's Scandinavian Masters, last summer.
