Charlotte Golf Set To Defend A-10 Title

Niners Open A-10 Play, Friday

May 1, 2008

Orlando, Fla. - The Charlotte 49ers fifth-ranked golf team opens play at the Atlantic 10 Championships, Friday morning in Orlando, Fla. The 49ers, two-time defending champions, were the preseason favorites to win the A-10 this season. The tourney gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m.

Charlotte is led by seniors Jonas Enander Hedin and Andrew DiBitetto. Enander Hedin is the 49ers stroke average leader (71.3) and is currently ranked 14th in the nation, individually, by GolfWeek. DiBitetto, a three-time all-conference choice, earned GCAA all-America honors by placing ninth at the 2007 NCAA National Championships.

The 49ers lineup also includes sophomore Corey Nagy, a GCAA Freshman all-America as well as honorable mention all-America, last year and junior Stefan Wiedergruen, Golf World's National Mid-Year Player of the Year, this past December. Joining those four will be freshman Will Golden, who is making his first appearance in the 49ers lineup. Golden is replacing senior Trevor Murphy.

The 49ers, who were the nation's consensus #1-ranked team after winning each of their first four stroke play events this fall, are currently ranked 5th (Golfstat) and 6th (GolfWeek and Golf Wrold/Coaches' poll) in the three major college golf rating systems.

Enander Hedin and DiBitetto have led the 49ers to 16 tournament titles in their four seasons with the 49ers, including back-to-back A-10 titles in 2006 and 2007. In addition, the 49ers have reached the NCAA Tournament in each of their three seasons, including last year's historic 3rd-place finish at the NCAA National Championships.

The Atlantic 10 Champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The A-10 tournament includes single rounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
