Alpharetta, Ga. - LIVE SCORING
The Charlotte 49ers golf team, ranked in the top five in all three polls, opens play at the U.S. Collegiate Championships, Monday. The three-day tournament boasts each of the nation's top eight teams. The 49ers finished second at the Las Vegas Invitational, Mar. 9. That event included six of the nation's top eight teams.
"Coming off of Las Vegas and playing in the final pairing with a team like Georgia and coming away one stroke better -- that should give our guys a little confidence, even though we didn't win," said 49ers head coach Jamie Green. "When you finish in the fall and win all four events, the level of expectations change. Our play might be a little better but going to tournaments with 8 or 9 of the top 10 teams in the country, we may not win the tournament. I think some of our guys are playing as good if not better than in the fall."
The US Collegiate Championship, hosted by Georgia Tech, will be played at The Golf Club of Georgia and is considered by many as the best college tournament in the country. The Golf Club of Georgia is located 30 minutes north of Atlanta in Alpharetta and hosted last season's NCAA East Regional where your 49ers began their run to a NCAA 3rd place finish. As one of the top ranked teams in the country the Charlotte 49ers are among the favorites to capture this prestigious title.
"Even though there are some top teams at these tournaments, its the same thing I've preached to the guys over the last four and a half years," Green said. "You're playing the golf course. If we do that as efficiently as we are capable of we can compete with any of the teams there."
Television Coverage: The tournament will be broadcast on Comcast Sports Southeast. Check your local cable provider or the tournament website (above) for more information and broadcast times.
