Orlando, Fla. - Senior Jonas Enander Hedin fired a six-under par 66 to lead the Charlotte 49ers fifth-ranked golf team into a tie for first-place at 10-under par after the first round of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships at Orange County National Golf Center. Each of Charlotte's top four golfers shot even par or better and are among the top 15 individuals.
"I'm proud of the guys and looking forward to the next couple days," said 49ers head coach Jamie Green. "Anytime you can get double-digit under par at a course that hosts PGA Tour Qualifying School, you're doing something right."
Enander Hedin is two strokes off the lead, held by Dayton's Rob Chappell, who shot an eight-under par 64.
"Jonas just played terrifically. As steady as ever," said Green. "He was certainly in play all day and very comfortable on the putting green. His distance control on his putts was excellent. By and large he just dissected the golf course. And he was backed up with some good play from his teammates as well."
The 49ers team total of -10, 278 shares the lead with Rhode Island. Dayton is one stroke back at -9. Xavier is in fourth-place at +4, 292.
49ers junior Stefan Wiedergruen is tied for third at three-under par 69, while sophomore Corey Nagy is tied for 12th at -1, 71. Senior Andrew DiBitetto rallied to shoot even-par, 72 to tie for 15th, individually. Freshman Will Golden shot a +4, 76 for the 49ers.
"Stefan eagled his first hole of the day was 4-under early. He played very solid all day," Green noted. "Corey was a little up and down but really hit the ball well and for Andrew to finish at even par after dropping a couple early, I'm very proud of his effort as well."
