Charlotte Places 2nd at Southern Highlands Championship

Las Vegas, Nev. - Senior Jonas Enander Hedin finished tied for first and the 49er shared the best round of the day to finish second, just two strokes off the pace, at the competitive Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship, Sunday. The event, which boasted six of the nation's top eight teams, was hosted by team champion UNLV.
UNLV won the event with a three-day total of +5, 869. Fourth-ranked Charlotte, which like UNLV and Minnesota posted the lowest final round of +5, 293, finished at +7, 871. #2-ranked Georgia, which had a two-stroke lead over UNLV and a four-stroke lead over Charlotte entering the final round placed third at +8, 872, following a third-round of +10, 298. Eighth-ranked Southern Cal was fourth at +14, 878 and third-ranked UCLA rounded out the top five at +17, 881.
Enander Hedin finished in a three-way tie for first at -3, 213. Only six players in the event broke par. Senior Andrew DiBitetto placed tied for 13th at +3, 219 and junior Stefan Wiedergruen copped a tie for 15th at +4, 220. DiBitetto had the 49ers lowest final round at -1, 71. Corey Nagy shot +1, 73 on the final day to finish tied for 27th at +8, 224 alongside team Trevor Murphy (+8, 224).
"I'm really proud of everyone," said 49es head coach Jamie Green. "There are top five finishes and their are elite top five finishes. This is an elite top five finish. It feels good to finish in the top five with so many top 10 teams competing. At the same time, our guys aren't exactly jumping for joy. They know they were that close to winning it but we're still quite pleased. Anytime you can step into an arena with so many top 10 teams and mix it up ith them and walk way within a couple strokes feels pretty good. You have to credit UNLV for playing well right here in their own backyard."

The 49ers are a consensus top 4 team according to the Golf World, Golfweek and Golfstat rankings systems. A second-place finish against this distnguished field will certainly enhance the 49ers standing. In six stroke playe events this year, the 49ers have won four tournaments and posted one runner-up finish.
Charlotte returns four players from the lineup that placed third at the 2007 NCAA National Championships, last spring.
