Assistant Coach:
5th year, 1996-98; 2005-07

Charlotte 49ers head men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz hired Bobby Kummer as Assistant Basketball Coach, June 21, 2005. Now in his second stint as an assistant coach with the 49ers, Kummer will begin his third year as an assistant to Lutz and his fifth year as a 49ers' assistant coach. A former four-year letterwinner for the 49ers, Kummer served as an assistant coach for the 49ers under Melvin Watkins for two seasons (1996-98), coaching alongside then assistant Lutz at the time. Kummer moved with Watkins when Watkins took over as head coach at Texas A&M and spent six years (1998-2004) as an assistant, there. He returned to Charlotte, in 2004, serving as the program's Director of Basketball Operations before being named Assistant Coach in 2005. "Bobby has developed into an excellent assistant coach with a wide-range of recruiting contacts," Lutz said. "He's a former player and he brings the same passion to his job as he did to the court in his playing days. He will be involved in all aspects of our program and will be especially involved with development of our post players, scouting opponents and defensive instruction. I am extremely pleased, both personally and professionally, to announce his hiring at Charlotte." "I'm very excited to be able to return to Charlotte and represent the 49ers as an assistant basketball coach," Kummer said. "It's a great honor to be able to come back and coach for the school where you played. To be able to work with such a class guy like coach Lutz and to be a part of a program with such history and tradition is an honor. I would like to thank coach Lutz, our AD Judy Rose, the current staff and the university community for this great opportunity for both myself and my wife." Kummer, the 49ers team captain in 1995 and 1996 played in 114 games during his four-year 49ers career. A two-time GTE/CoSIDA Academic all-Region honoree who graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in history in 1996, Kummer was named the Metro Conference Male Academic Student-Athlete of the Year in 1995. He won the 49ers' coveted Grubstake Award in 1993 and 1996 and helped the 49ers to the 1995 Metro Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament and the 1994 NIT. Known as a hard-nosed player, Kummer might best be remembered for losing two teeth in a collision during a Jan. 19, 1995 game vs. Louisville, spitting them out and returning to action during that 86-82 victory. Kummer, 33, and his wife, Nicole, reside in Charlotte.
