Charlotte Suspends Game with A&T after 8-6 Lead through Seven

Teams Will Make Up Rest of Contest April 8th

March 19, 2008

Greensboro, N.C. - The North Carolina A & T Aggies committed six errors, resulting in four Charlotte 49ers unearned runs as Charlotte took an 8-6 lead into the seventh inning in Greensboro's War Memorial Stadium in college baseball action. The game was halted at that point and will be completed on April 8. A&T will have a runner at first and one out.

With weather threatening the completion of the game, the head coaches agreed before the start of the game to resume any incomplete result when the Aggies returned the home-and-home series in April. After the completion of the game, the two teams will play their scheduled nine-inning contest afterward.

Charlotte got on the board first in the top of the first when Shayne Moody reached on an error, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to put Charlotte up 1-0 without a hit.

A&T answered with the tying run when Joe McIntyre homered to left off of Charlotte starter B.J. Hagen.

The Niners added a pair of unearned runs in the second, as Alex Burt reached via error, Rob Lyerly singled and Bray scored on a groundout by Corey Shaylor. Aaron Bray knocked home Lyerly with a ball that nicked off the pitcher's glove.

Brad McElroy hit a leadoff single in the third and advanced to second on a single, stole third and came home on a Chris Taylor groundout to extend Charlotte's lead to 4-1.

The Aggies were able to take the lead in the bottom of the third on four runs off of Hagen on five straight one-out singles, a wild pitch and an RBI groundout.

Charlotte added their first earned run of the day in the fourth to tie the game at five. Lyerly tripled to start the inning and Shaylor brought him home with a sacrifice fly.

The Niners took the lead in the fifth with two more earned runs. After an out, McElroy walked, Taylor singled and Alan Parks walked to load the bases. Burt hit an RBI groundout to score one run and Burt and Taylor converted on a double steal of second and home to give Charlotte a 7-5 lead.

A&T scored on three singles and a wild pitch in the fifth to pull to within one run, but Charlotte worked for two walks, another double steal and scored a run on a balk to create the 8-6 margin.

Hagen is the pitcher of record for Charlotte. A&T starter Chris Eggers is currently the pitcher of record for A&T.

Charlotte hosts Saint Louis to begin Atlantic 10 play this weekend at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. Friday's opener starts at 6 p.m.
