Philadelphia, Pa. - Charlotte captured both the Atlantic 10 Conference's Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, officials announced today. Sophomore third baseman Aaron Bray and sophomore reliever Kyle Pfirrman were the winners in the first week of play in 2007.
Bray, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year, lifted the Niners to a victory in their season-opening game against High Point. The Charlotte native and Independence High star had the game-winning RBI, a sacrifice fly, in the tenth inning, the first of two Charlotte runs to garner a 2-0 victory in the season-opener. Bray turned around Sunday with three hits and scored a run as Charlotte dropped a 7-6 decision to the Panthers.
Pfirrman allow Charlotte the chance to win in extra innings. He pitched four scoreless innings after coming on in a scoreless game in the seventh to notch his first win of the season as the Niners dropped the two runs in the tenth. The lefty from Badin High in Hamilton, Ohio, scattered a pair of hits and a walk in his four innings of work, striking out one Panther.
Charlotte is 1-1 to start the 2007 campaign, with a pair of road games scheduled this Friday and Saturday at Campbell University. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m., with Sunday's contest to begin at 2 p.m.
