Rosenbaum's First Career Complete Game Helps Charlotte Defeat Stony Brook 6-1

Niners Improve to 10-0 at Home in 2008; DH Starts at Noon Sunday

March 15, 2008

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Junior Zach Rosenbaum tossed his first-career complete game as the Charlotte 49ers defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves 6-1 at home Saturday. Charlotte improves to 12-2 overall, 10-0 at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium this season. They have won their last 12 games at home and are 25-3 since returning to the new stadium last March 30.

The two-hour, one-minute game finished before the rains came to Charlotte, which canceled the scheduled second game of the doubleheader. The teams will play two nine-inning games Sunday, scheduled to begin at noon.

The complete game was the first for Rosenbaum in his career. He allowed one walk to go with the seven hits and struck out five batters on 109 pitches. He is now 3-0 on the season.

Stony Brook (4-3) scored in the top of the first on three hits. Leadoff hitter Brian Witkowski singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single by designated hitter Mike Stephan. Rosenbaum left the bases loaded in the fifth, and allowed only two other runners to second the rest of the way.

Charlotte came back for the eighth time this season by scoring a run in the first inning, four in the second and one more in the third.

Aaron Bray drew a walk to lead off the bottom half of inning one, advanced to third on a single by shortstop Shayne Moody and scored on a sacrifice fly by center fielder Brad McElroy.

The four runs in the second were unearned. Alex Burt reached on an infield error, and with two outs in the inning, Charlotte drew a walk and had three hits, including two doubles to score the runs. Ross Steedley drove in Burt with an RBI single, while Bray drove in Corey Shaylor with an RBI double and Moody brought home Steedley and Bray with his two-RBI double.

McElroy led off the third inning with a double, while left fielder Alan Parks knocked him home with an infield single.

Stony Brook starter Tom Koehler settled after at that point, allowing just two baserunners through the next three innings. Reliever Matt Harloff allowed a walk and a hit batter in his two innings, striking out two 49ers in his appearance.

Koehler took his first loss of the season (2-1). In six innings, he was only charged with a pair of earned runs. He gave up eight hits and two walks, striking out two.

Moody was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day, drawing a walk. Parks finished with two hits and has been retired only once in his last seven plate appearances. Bray's double gives him a hit in all but one game for Charlotte this season. He has scored a run in all but two games for the Niners in 2008.

Seven different Seawolves had a hit for Stony Brook.
