Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's and women's cross country teams will be running a familiar course Friday, Sept. 21 when the UNC Charlotte campus hosts the First Annual Charlotte Invitational. The event, originally scheduled to be held at Reedy Creek Park, will be the first intercollegiate meet held on University property in the last 25 years.
"We are thrilled to bring this to campus," head coach Brad Herbster said. "It is a wonderful opportunity to show off campus and what we feel is a great cross country course for the athletes and spectators."
The meet will feature participants from both collegiate and high school teams, with Charlotte, Pfeiffer, South Carolina, Queens and USC-Upstate currently slated to compete. Hopewell High School will co-sponsor the high school race.
Runners will begin the race, which will tour them on a 5,000- or 8,000-meter course, in the practice fields directly behind the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center. Competitors will enjoy a stadium finish on the Belk Track.
In addition to serving as the course for the Charlotte Invitational, Charlotte's new on-campus course will host the 2008 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships.
Charlotte fans can catch the 49ers in action as the women start their 5K at 6:20 p.m., while the men take on the 8K course at 6:50 p.m.
