Charlotte, N.C. - For their third consecutive race, both the men's and women's Charlotte 49ers cross country teams swept titles in weekend competition, this time at the First Annual Charlotte Invitational held on the University campus Friday evening. The men's team pulled in its third consecutive perfect team score with 15 points, while the women's team netted 20 points.
Sophomore Chase Eckard, who set the men's 8K course record with 26:20.5, claimed the individual race title, his second of the year. Freshman Dakota Lowery (26:39.0), sophomore Jordan Rickard (26:39.3), sophomore Alan Ford (26:59.2) and senior Matt Hipps (27:16.0) rounded out the top five finishes for the 49ers.
On the men's side, Charlotte's perfect team score bested Pfeiffer (56) and USC Upstate (69).
Junior Aja Jackson, setting the women's 5K course record at 18:33.2, claimed her third consecutive race title, while freshmen Amanda Goetschius (18:37.4) and Keara Thomas (18:45.7) once again took the second and third positions, respectively. Freshmen Laura McCary (19:19.5) and Kelsey Conroy (19:35.5) completed the newcomer-heavy women's top finishers.
The women's team out-performed South Carolina (46), Pfeiffer (90) and USC Upstate (94).
The Charlotte Invitational course will also serve as the race site for the 2008 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships. The race marked the first cross country event held on the UNC Charlotte campus in over 25 years.
