Daniels Named Female Student-Athlete of the Year by Atlantic 10 Conference

Charlotte Athlete Earns Conference-Level Honor Both Years in League

July 5, 2007

Philadelphia, Pa. - Charlotte runner Jane Daniels and Saint Louis soccer midfielder John DiRaimondo have been named the Atlantic 10 female and male Scholar-Athletes of the Year in voting conducted among the Conference's directors of athletics.

Daniels won the 3000-meter steeplechase and finished second in 5000-meter run at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship, helping the 49ers to their second-straight A-10 title. The senior from Oostburg, Wis., also left her mark in the 49ers' record book with a share of the distance medley relay school record (11:43.96) and the 2000-meter steeplechase school record (7:25.06). For her efforts, she was named the A-10's Student-Athlete of the Year in both women's cross country and track & field. At the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship she placed eighth to earn All-Conference laurels this past season.

Daniels was one of seven student-athletes awarded the Coca-Cola NCAA Division I Community All-America Award for Community Service this summer. The president of the 49ers' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has overseen two shoe drives per year, organized and marketed two blood drives per year, participated in tutoring with the Police Athletic League (PAL), organized annual Toys for Tots Drives and, on an annual basis, volunteered at Special Olympics track meets.

DiRaimondo ended his collegiate career as a two-time semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate soccer player. The St. Louis, MO., native garnered third-team All-America honors this past season, as well as being named the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year in men's soccer. The league's Offensive Player of the Year in 2005, DiRaimondo was a four-time All-Conference selection during his career and ranks sixth on SLU's all-time career assists list with 28. DiRaimondo will embark on a professional career after being chosen fourth overall in the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft by the Colorado Rapids.

Off the field, DiRaimondo is a two-time ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America (2005, 2006) and the 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America and All-Region Scholar Athlete. He was also named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team each of the last two seasons.

Daniels' honor marks the second time in as many years in the league that the 49ers have had a player named to the conference-level award. Baseball's Mike Ambrose was the male student-athlete of the year for the league in 2006.

For the first time, the Atlantic 10 directors of athletics recognized individuals on each campus as Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The A-10 would like to congratulate the following:
