2005-2006 49ER Club Activities Recap

The Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation completed another successful year of fundraising activities, once again surpassing the $1.12 million mark through its four main resources, not including dollars raised for capital projects and endowments:

  • Annual Giving Campaign - $713,000
  • 23rd Annual Great Gold Rush Auction Presented by Chartwells - $270,000
  • 2nd Annual "Let Me Play" Sponsored by Wachovia - $82,000
  • 29th Annual OrthoCarolina 49er Club Golf Outing - $58,000

In October of 2005, the 3rd Annual Uptown Tip-Off was held at the Wachovia Atrium. Head basketball coaches Bobby Lutz and Amanda Butler were on hand to greet fans and talk about the 2005-06 season. A prize wheel and pop-a-shot game offered fans an opportunity to win a variety of prizes including season tickets, individual game tickets, shirts and hats. Due to popular demand, a second location has been added to the schedule for 2006. The 4th Annual Uptown Tip-Off will be held on October 26 at the Wachovia Atrium with another Tip-Off scheduled on October 31 at Founders Hall.

The 2nd Annual "Let Me Play" Luncheon sponsored by Wachovia was held in November at The Westin in Uptown Charlotte. Created to bring together women in the community and Charlotte 49ers female student-athletes, this event continued its successful beginning by attracting more than 370 attendees. Karen Popp, former Charlotte 49ers women's basketball player, was the event's keynote speaker focusing on the effect that athletics has had in molding her life and career. An attorney with Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP, Popp served as a prosecutor in many famous New York City mafia cases in addition to serving as legal counsel to both Janet Reno and President Bill Clinton. More than $82,000 was raised as a result of the luncheon. Betty Chafin Rash served as chairperson for the event. The 3rd Annual "Let Me Play" Luncheon is scheduled for November 14, 2006.

Chancellor Phil Dubois and his wife, Lisa Lewis Dubois, opened their home in December for the 49er Club's annual Green Jacket Reception. More than 275 green jacket members enjoyed an evening of fun and wonderful food catered by The Hilton at University Place.

The 29th Annual OrthoCarolina 49er Club Golf Outing was held on April 17 at TPC Piper Glen. A full field of 132 golfers hit the links vying to win a variety of prizes. The foursomes from Shelco, Inc. and OrthoCarolina captured 1st place gross and net, respectively. Although the round was cut short due to an afternoon storm, the Athletic Foundation was able to raise $58,000 for athletic scholarships. David Stanford, Vice President of RT Dooley Construction Company, served as event chair. Next year's event will be held on April 16, 2007.

Chartwells, a division of The Compass Group, became the first-ever presenting sponsor of the 23rd Annual Great Gold Rush Auction held on June 3 in Dale F. Halton Arena and the James H. Barnhardt Student Activity Center. Kevin Brown, Vice President of Client Services for TIAA-CREF, chaired the event. Henry Williams, the 49ers all-time leading scorer, and Dale Halton, former CEO of Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Charlotte, served as host and hostess. A record 650 attendees bid on over 1650 items worth more than $430,000. When the event concluded, the Athletic Foundation had raised an astounding $270,000. The 24th Annual Great Gold Rush Auction is scheduled for June 2, 2007.
